The Riace Bronzes, two splendid Greek statues salvaged from the sea, are exhibited in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria. Indeed, it is thanks to the irresistible attraction of these two masterpieces (one of which is attributed to Fidia, the master Greek sculptor of the fifth century B.C.) that hundreds of thousands of visitors have come to Calabria.
Many of them are then delighted to discover the region's beautiful landscape, clean seas, lush vegetation which, in some areas, is quite wild and the many architectural and artistic masterpieces which are unexpected both in terms of their quality and quantity.
Extraordinary, fascinating Calabria, a land of a thousand and sometimes sophisticated surprises.
The Codex Purpureus, for example, is an object of exquisite beauty, a rare sixth-century Greek evangeliary conserved in the Diocesan Museum in Rossano, with its silver lettering and illustrated with splendidly elegant figures and religious scenes.
The stunning, picturesque coast of Tropea on the Tyrrhenian Sea (Calabria is also bathed by the Ionian) is a breathtaking surprise when seen for the first time.
But in Calabria, we repeat, the surprises never end.
