Cultural heritage

ENIT’s Historical Archive relates to the activities of the Italian National Tourism Board from 1919 – the year of its foundation – to the present day and consists of about 4,000 ML documents and over 200,000 images including slides, photographs, negatives, videos and historical posters. The cultural heritage is completed by more than 14,000 volumes in the ENIT Library.

The material that has been preserved is rich and diverse, both in terms of its content and its format. It reflects and bears witness to the changes and events that have characterised ENIT from its establishment to the present day in the fulfilment of its mission, namely that of coordinating the development of the Italian National Tourism Industry and promoting it abroad.

ENIT’s Digital Archive, whose work started in 2019, is continuously being expanded thanks to an ambitious project to census, archive, catalogue and promote its historical and artistic heritage.

To date, the part that can be consulted is divided between the paper part, for which a brief inventory exists, and the part that is already being digitised. Currently, the digital section is made up of more than 60,000 photographic images and historical posters, physically stored at the Board’s central headquarters.

ENIT’s virtual exhibition portal was created to provide a space for promoting the Italian National Tourist Board’s cultural heritage.

“Promoting Beauty” and “Promoting Beauty. Venezia 1600” are two immersive visual pathways, one of which was created to mark the centenary of ENIT’s foundation and the other – which is now available – to mark 1600 years since the foundation of Venice.

Both exhibitions are accompanied by respective paper catalogues that can also be consulted online.
