Marine tourism in Basilicata

The sea of Basilicata

In Basilicata, mooring your boat means letting yourself be carried away by an ancient culture that leaves you with unforgettable emotions.

Bordered by two seas, the Tyrrhenian to the west, the Ionian to the east, this region has for many years aimed to meet even the most complex needs of nautical tourism, which increasingly demands not only a place for its boat, but also an experience to be lived, a response to its own needs for passion.

Maratea on the one hand, Pisticci and Policoro on the other offer very different landscapes, but all three marinas can count on top quality services and activities.

As well as, of course, crystal-clear sea, as confirmed by the five Blue Flags awarded to Basilicata for 2023 by the Fee - Foundation for Environmental Education on the basis of certain criteria such as cleanliness of the water, services on the beaches, green areas and cycle paths, hotel facilities and others.

On the Ionian Sea, Bernalda, Pisticci, Nova Siri and Policoro were awarded this precious recognition, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, Maratea, which was also confirmed with the Five Sails by Legambiente, which included it among the most beautiful seas in Italy.

Mooring in Basilicata also means immersing yourself in an ancient culture and a unique, unspoilt environment. Leaving your boat in the ports of Pisticci and Policoro means entering the heart of Magna Graecia where the great mathematician Pythagoras lived. An ancient history that the Apt Basilicata has projected into the future by including it in the game Minecraft. Just as in Policoro it is possible to explore the Pantano di Policoro forest, which represents one of the last strips of lowland forest in Italy.

From these two ports, the beating heart of Magna Graecia, you can admire some precious testimonies of a very ancient past such as the “Tavole Palatine” of Metaponto or the archaeological museums of Policoro and Metaponto. And just a few kilometres away is the city of Matera with its Sassi, a Unesco World Heritage Site and European Capital of Culture in 2019.

And it is no coincidence that recently the “Porto degli Argonauti”, thanks to the support of the Basilicata Region, hosted the Xcat World Championship 2023 for three days. The fastest catamarans in the world, capable of reaching 200 km/h, competed for ranking points with a spectacle that attracted many tourists and lovers of the sport.

On the opposite side is Maratea, known not surprisingly as the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea, where nautical tourism has been established for many years.

Right here, in place of the lighthouse, dominating the coast and being seen and recognised from afar, there is a Christ the Redeemer with outstretched arms, imposing on the top of the mountain, reminiscent of the one in Rio de Janeiro. As if to indicate that the coast and the sea represent the gateway to a world to be explored and experienced with a lot of adrenaline activities such as paragliding and kayaking.

The port of Maratea is located in the easternmost part of the Gulf of Policastro; it is protected by the 275 m long elbow-shaped North Pier oriented S/SE and the 260 m long South Pier oriented WNW/NW. Inside the basin are three elbow-shaped piers, two of which extend from the sharf. Three more piers extend from the secondary pier in a SE direction. A floating pier is positioned at the root of the breakwater during the summer period.

The Marina of Policoro is today the largest and best equipped marina in the Ionian Sea with its 750 berths from 8 to 30 m distributed in the Tourist Port (215) and in the private dock of the Marina Village (535). A Tourist Port that boasts exclusive services designed both for the safety and comfort of yachtsmen, with the boatyard and the wide range of services ashore, and for leisure time with the exclusive Shopping Way commercial artery and the sports centres, golf course, sports fishing lakes and the SPA of the 5-star Luxury Hotel in the Marinagri complex.

The “Porto degli Argonauti”, inaugurated in October 2009, is an inland port on the Ionian coast of Basilicata, in Marina di Pisticci (MT) in the heart of the Ionian Sea. It is an elegant and functional marina capable of accommodating 450 small and medium-sized coastal navigation boats, including those longer than 30 metres.
