Marine tourism in Calabria

The sea of Calabria

The Calabria Region offers unforgettable experiences for sailing enthusiasts with suggestive landscapes, enchanting beaches, and welcoming ports.

Starting from the northernmost point of the Tyrrhenian coast, we sail along the Riviera dei Cedri, famous for the widespread cultivation of cedar. From the sea, you can discover the island of Dino, the Arcomagno cave, the island of Cirella, Diamante and Belvedere Marittimo.

The navigation continues towards the Costa degli Dei, with the ports of Vibo, Pizzo and Tropea. From here there are coves and cliffs overlooking the sea. Off the coast, the old lighthouse of Capo Vaticano is clearly visible. From the Costa degli Dei, you reach the Costa Viola passing through the port of Gioia Tauro, the center of containerized goods traffic in the Mediterranean.

To admire along the coast the rock of the olive tree of Palmi, the guardhouse of Villa Repaci, the village of Chianalea, and the Ruffo Castle in Scilla set on the rock overlooking the port. Sailing through the Strait of Messina, you skirt the towns of Cannitello and Villa San Giovanni, up to Reggio Calabria, the city of Bergamot and where the Riace Bronzes are kept.

From the Tyrrhenian coast, you reach the Ionian one, with the countries of the Grecanic area. From the sea, the village of Pentedattilo is clearly visible, perched on a cliff in the shape of five fingers. After passing the centers of Bova and Palizzi, you arrive at Capo Spartivento, with its suggestive lighthouse. Continuing along the Costa dei Gelsomini we meet Rocella Jonica with the port among the best equipped on the Ionian coast, Monasterace, with the lighthouse of Punta Stilo which houses the Temple of Kaulon.

The itinerary by sea arrives on the Costa degli Aranci, with Badolato, Soverato and Squillace, a medieval village where ceramics are worked in the traditional way. The marine district of Catanzaro, Catanzaro Lido, welcomes you with its elegant and well-equipped accommodation facilities, the recently built tourist port and the promenade that offers a view of the wide Gulf of Squillace.

We embrace the Costa dei Saraceni, with Isola Capo Rizzuto which is part of a vast Marine Nature Reserve. Also here stands the Aragonese castle of Le Castella, a sixteenth-century fortification, almost entirely surrounded by the sea and connected to the mainland by a thin strip of sand. It is also on this coast the town of Crotone, with the archaeological site of Capocolonna that extends across the entire promontory, with its fascinating single remaining column of the great Hera Lacinia Temple. Finally, we skirt Cirò Marina where the homonymous wine is produced which, according to legend, was already offered to the athletes who won the ancient Greek Olympics.

The navigation ends along the Costa degli Achei, with Schiavonea, a seaside village of the city of Corigliano Calabro. The port has two piers and houses the fish market which contributes to the local economy, together with the new sector intended to accommodate pleasure boats. Trebisacce is a seaside tourist resort with a characteristic seaside village and a lively tourist and fishing port. Continuing we meet, overlooking the sea, the Federiciano Castle of Roseto Capo Spulico. The itinerary ends with the beautiful views offered by the Rocca Imperiale view.

Marine tourism in Calabria

Discover the precious treasures of Calabria by sailing along the Calabrian coasts, it is possible thanks to the numerous landing points and tourist ports along the almost 800 km coast that overlook two seas: the Tyrrhenian and Ionian.

The main ports on the Tyrrhenian coast are from north to south:

  1. Belvedere Marittimo can accommodate almost up to 200 boats that moor there, especially during the summer
  2. The port of Cetraro allows you to accommodate boats of considerable size. Basic services are provided here, such as refueling and highly qualified mechanical and electrical assistance
  3. The port of Vibo Marina with its two piers and various quays, intended for commercial, military and pleasure craft operations, provides many services to vessels and houses the port office, the coast guard, and the customs police lookouts. It has around 450 berths
  4. The port of Tropea can hold over six hundred boats and has a pier more than five hundred meters long, used by large fishing boats and ferries that ply between the Aeolian Islands. The services, from water to electricity, up to refueling, are insured
  5. The tourist port of Palmi, also known as Taureana, can accommodate pleasure and fishing boats, offering small shipbuilding and refueling services
  6. Chianalea in Scilla, with the small port and the sea that laps the old houses leaning against each other
  7. The port of Reggio Calabria, although it has only about fifty berths, offers maintenance and refueling services

On the Ionian coast, I Laghi di Sibari is a residential and port complex, a few kilometers from Sibari. Laghi di Sibari overlooks the Ionian Sea, in the Gulf of Taranto, and is characterized by four peninsulas, each of which houses hundreds of villas. Around the complex extend 2.5 km of golden and sandy beaches, reachable by private means, as well as by boat and a rubber train. With its 2800 berths, Laghi di Sibari represents the largest port in the Mediterranean. Inside there are various essential services for yachting and for users, including hotel and restaurant businesses, a pharmacy, a grocery store, two shipyards, several shops, a refueling station for cars and boats. The common services, sports facilities, surveillance, water supply, connections with the beaches, equipped green care and event planning are coordinated and insured by the Sibari Lakes Association.
