The Regional Park of Mount Matese extends for thirty-three thousand hectares. You can get there from Benevento and Caserta, or the region of Molise. The fastest driveway to Matese is the so-called Telesina, embracing both the provinces of Benevento and Caserta.
You can also reach the Regional Park of Picentini Mountains by train from Naples and Salerno, or by the Air, CSTP, and SITA bus services departing from Avellino and Salerno.
The nearest airport is Napoli Capodichino.
The Campania region doesn't currently have any operating ski slopes. However, the restoration project of the skiing facility in Laceno (Avellino) is in the making. If you are visiting Campania, and dream of a winter mountain break, the Regional Park of Mount Matese and the Regional Park of Picentini Mountains could be your thing.
Here, snowshoeing is perfect for your fun and relaxing winter hikes. A snowshoe visit to the karst tableland and snowy peaks of Matese park is one of the most charming activities of the winter season. Snowshoes are getting increasingly popular because they are easy to use, eco-friendly, and suitable for all. They offer a one-of-a-kind way to trek in the mountains, discover new paths, and experience a sustainable and enjoyable trip.
The Laceno plateau can count on many visit-worthy locations. First and foremost, there's the namesake lake entered by river Tronola and encircled by woods full of beech trees, chestnuts, oaks, and maples. The woods are populated by a varied fauna of birds and mammals. The population of birds includes blackbirds, robins, titmice, and nightingales; while among the birds of prey, one can mention buzzards, peregrine falcons, and owls.
You may meet hedgehogs, squirrels, hares, foxes, and badgers on your path. Above all, the woods of Laceno are home to the local wolves of Irpinia, so you might happen to see them in their natural habitat.
The formidable flora and fauna are not the only reasons to visit Laceno. The area hosts remarkable peaks, such as Mount Cervialto (1.809 meters high), Mount Rajamagra (1.667 meters high), Cervarolo (1,558 meters), and the Great Mountain (1.509 meters).
Other trekking destinations are the Caliendo Caves and the Tannera Torrent.
