Emilia-Romagna

With 9,000 km of cycling routes, a rich calendar of events, and numerous services for cyclists, Emilia-Romagna is one of the most bike-friendly regions in Italy.

Cycling enthusiasts are spoilt for choice when it comes to exploring this beautiful region in the heart of Italy on two wheels - surrounded by nature, culture and good food. Via Romagna, is a ring-route to be cycled in stages, connecting the provinces of Ferrara, Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini, passing through 30 towns, 20 fortresses and medieval villages; whereas the Ciclovia del Sole is a fascinating route travelling through the plains of the Bologna, built on a former railway line. The Food Valley Bike is a must, featuring an itinerary that crosses the lands of Giuseppe Verdi, stopping by places of origin of gastronomic products which are symbolic of Italian cuisine, such as Parma ham and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. The 10 Cycle Paths of the Parks is one for nature lovers, surrounded by impressive landscapes including regional nature reserves.

For professionals and racing enthusiasts, there are numerous Gran Fondo races not to be missed, including the famous Nove Colli, as well as the great Italian Bike Festival, a reference point for the European bicycle market hosted in September at the Misano World Circuit in Misano Adriatico. Lastly, the Cycle Summit, an international meeting (and workshop) for bike tour operators, hosted in October in Riolo Terme.

With regard to services and providers, Emilia-Romagna is home to TerraBici, the regional consortium of bike hotels, which has been promoting cycling tourism internationally since 2014. Along the Romagna Riviera, there are roughly 100 bike hotels, to which another 200 hotels, equipped and increasingly specialized in this tourist segment, are added throughout the Region.

High expectations are held for the "Grand Depart" of the Tour de France 2024, during which Emilia-Romagna will be the protagonist of three stages: Florence-Rimini on 29 June 2024, Cesenatico-Bologna on 30 June 2024 and Piacenza-Turin on 1 July 2024. Thanks to this prestigious event, 1.8 million spectators and 130 thousand guests are expected in the hotels of the three Emilia-Romagna stages, consequently resulting in invaluable revenue to the tourism space.
