TOP REGIONS FOR THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BANK HOLIDAY AND CHRISTMAS: LOMBARDY, EMILIA ROMAGNA, SICILY, CAMPANIA, TUSCANY AND VENETO

Italy continues to shine in the tourist industry, particularly brightly at the end of the year and during the Immaculate Conception bank holiday and Christmas periods. Its artistic and cultural heritage attracts visitors from all over the world. In December, the Christmas atmosphere adds a spark of magic to the cities, with Christmas markets, twinkling lights and unique festive traditions. 29% of the population surveyed by ENIT said they would definitely (7%) or probably (22%) take a break over the Immaculate Conception bank holiday weekend of 8 December, continuing through the weekend until Sunday 10, in 90% of cases in Italy. The most popular destinations in Italy are the ones in Lombardy (17%), whose patron saint favours the tradition of travelling, as well as the mountainous destinations of Trentino-South Tyrol and the locations of Piedmont, Lazio and Campania.

Similarly, for the Christmas holidays, 24% say they wanted to go on holiday (8% definitely) and would go to Lombardy (11%), Campania or Sicily (9%), or Liguria, Piedmont or Trentino-South Tyrol (8%). Compared to last year, holiday choices are affected by the economic situation which, while unchanged in 47% of cases, has improved for 13% and is reported as more difficult for 36%. Art cities offer extraordinary cultural experiences with their historical monuments, museums and majestic cathedrals. During the Immaculate Conception bank holiday in December, many people take advantage of the long weekend to enjoy Italy’s artistic and architectural treasures.

Coastal regions have their own type of charm. Although the winter period may not be ideal for sunbathing, Italy’s coastal resorts offer breathtaking scenery, exceptional food and a tranquillity unique to the low tourist season.

Italian cuisine continues to be a major tourist attraction. Delicious regional dishes accompanied by fine wines make every meal an unforgettable experience. During the festive season, Italy’s tables are filled with traditional delicacies, contributing to a full immersion in the local culture.

Sustainable tourism is an increasingly important factor, and Italy is adapting to this trend. Many cities and regions are promoting eco-friendly initiatives and a commitment to preserving their natural beauty and cultural heritage. This focus on sustainability is helping Italy maintain its place among the favourite destinations of responsible travellers.

“Italy’s buzzing tourism at the end of the year and during the pre-Christmas Immaculate Conception bank holiday is fruit of a unique blend of history, culture, nature and cuisine. This winning combination continues to make Italy a sought-after destination, offering unforgettable experiences to anyone choosing to explore this enchanting country,” says Ivana Jelinic, Chair and CEO of ENIT.

According to the ENIT survey on a sample of over 3,000 people to measure leisure stays, 45% treated themselves to longer holidays as well as weekends in September and October, and 15% chose to take their main (longest) holidays in the autumn. For short autumn breaks, 67% changed destination each time. It was the good weather that prompted these holidays during warm autumn weekends (32% of cases), while these breaks were already planned by 36% but were supplemented with more trips for 24% of respondents. 90% of these short autumn breaks were spent in Italy, particularly in Lombardy (13%), Emilia Romagna (12%) and Sicily (11%), followed by Campania, Tuscany, Veneto and Liguria (each 10%). 40% of these were beach holidays, while 34% chose cultural destinations and 30% preferred nature holidays. Next came relaxation (29%), mountain getaways (26%), experience-based local tourism (16%), food and wine (14%) and spa breaks (12%). During this period, 50% of holidays were in couples, 24% with family and 13% with friends.
