First data on Easter and spring national holiday trends

16 April 2025

Press Release ENIT - UNIONCAMERE/Isnart

  • Six out of ten rooms sold for Easter and spring national holidays, with an estimated turnover of around 130 million euro in the hotel industry alone
  • Italy beats France: almost 7 million foreign tourists arriving at Italian airports between March and May, with the forthcoming long weekends acting as a driving force. Ninety-six percent leisure arrivals mainly from the UK, Germany, USA, France and Spain
  • The increase in tourism visibility of the country's inland areas is confirmed (70% of rooms occupied)
  • Thirty percent of accommodation businesses in Lazio, Umbria and Marche have shown a positive impact from the start of the Jubilee year
  • Excellent prospects also for the summer season: 6 out of 10 rooms have already been sold for June, July and August

Rome, 16 April 2025. Easter 2025: booking boom. The latest survey of Italian accommodation businesses, carried out by ISNART for Unioncamere and ENIT as part of the Chamber of Commerce Observatory on the Tourism Economy, shows how operators report a room occupancy rate for the Easter period of almost 60%.

In the hotel sector alone, this corresponds to more than 670,000 rooms sold, with an estimated turnover of around 128 million euros. (1)

The strongest booking trend is in the slow tourism destinations of the country's inland areas, where more than 70% of rooms are occupied; with one in ten more rooms sold than in 2024, with the increased visibility of destinations off the usual tourist routes appearing to be further confirmed. Bookings in art cities (63.9%), mountain resorts (61.3%) and spa destinations (59.6%) were also excellent.

The early sales trend for the spring weekend national holidays also seems to have lived up to expectations: 57% for the 25 April holiday and 55% for the 1 May holiday, respectively.

These numbers are certainly affected by the contribution of foreign tourism. As noted by Enit S.p.A., between March and May 2025, total airport arrivals in Italy from abroad are expected to increase by +4.5% compared to the same quarter of 2024 (6,826,831 vs. 6,534,725; of which 96% were for leisure). Twenty-eight point four percent of these flows are expected in Rome, in the wake of the Jubilee effect: it should be noted that in Lazio, Umbria and Marche, 30% of businesses associate the growth of their clientele with the Jubilee Event, which seems to confirm its value in terms of tourist attractiveness, thanks to the combination with the spring festivities.

The top five source markets for spending the holidays in Italy are the United Kingdom, with a share of 15.1%, Germany with 10.3%, the United States with 8.7%, France with 8.8% and Spain with 7.7%. Nearly 10% of departures for Italian destinations are around 17 April, close to the Easter weekend; numbers that confirm the attractiveness of our country, which once again surpasses its French competitors in tourist choices: Italy records, in fact, almost 7 million arrivals against the 4.5 million expected in transalpine airports.

And for summer 2025? Operators already report having sold 6 out of 10 rooms for stays in June, 64.8 per cent for July and 65.4 per cent for August, numbers that are already more than positive and, moreover, destined to grow as the summer season approaches.

"The Easter holidays and the upcoming long weekends represent an important moment for our country, a destination for holidaymakers from all over the world", comments Ivana Jelinic, ENIT CEO. "The numbers prove us right, Italy continues to grow in the various tourism sectors. Our offer is rich and varied, we must continue on this path to make the wonders of Made in Italy more and more known”.

“One in four tourists choose Italy for its good value for money”, emphasises Loretta Credaro, Isnart President. "However, there are many companies in the chain that, despite inflation pushing up operating costs, are investing in increasingly customised services, in order to capture new market clusters - think of cycle tourists and the growth of wellness - and target high-end demand, willing to pay for a quality offer".

"Italian tourism is increasingly competitive. The first data on Easter and spring holidays also tell us this: 130 million euro turnover for the accommodation sector, more foreign airport arrivals than those recorded by a historical competitor like France, even more sought-after inland areas - with 70% of rooms occupied - and excellent prospects for the summer season, with 6 out of 10 rooms sold in the June-August quarter. Significant estimates and trends, the ones surveyed by ISNART for Unioncamere and ENIT, also suggest how the deseasonalisation, diversification and sustainability policies and activities implemented by the Ministry of Tourism, together with the Regions, associations and operators, are leading the sector to a virtuous and successful development. Rome, in particular, with a +3% increase in arrivals compared to last Easter - according to the Bilateral Tourism Board of Lazio - is a bit of an emblem of the integrity of the Italian tourism industry, which is constantly growing, and of how the Jubilee is a significant factor of attraction from North to South”, says Daniela Santanchè, Minister of Tourism.
