ITALY BEST DESTINATION ACCORDING TO THE BRITISH DAILY TELEGRAPH

VENICE BEST EUROPEAN CITY

Italian tourism wins recognition from one of the UK’s leading newspapers: The Daily Telegraph pays tribute to the Peninsula’s greatness by declaring it the 2023 Best European Destination. A double celebration with Venice as Best European City, beating Rome and Seville. The other candidates for best country were Greece and Norway.

Italy was rewarded by the readership of the historic newspaper founded in 1885 and traditionally aimed at affluent middle to upper-middle class readers, generally over 50. It is one of the most widely read newspapers both in print and online in the UK (print readership over 800,000 per day, digital readership around 23 million per month).

The Telegraph awards have been a much-anticipated and landmark award for over 25 years, since it was launched in 1998. The prestigious annual Travel Awards had been discontinued during the Covid years and are now back, reflecting Telegraph readers’ interest in travel and Italy in particular. The ceremony took place in the prestigious Café Royal on Regent Street in central London.

‘This is not just an acknowledgement that honours Italy's wonders, the work of an entire chain of professionals, and the work of enhancement and promotion that the Ministry of Tourism has initiated and is carrying out from a strategic perspective. In fact, it must also be a stimulus, an incentive to continue along this road and to always give our best, together, to achieve even more ambitious goals and prove, day after day, that we are worthy of the admiration and love that the whole world feels for our splendid Italy. A declaration that also highlights the important investment that the government is making in the sector,’ commented Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè.

‘Another testimony of how well Italy is working in terms of brand promotion recognised internationally by a very attentive and demanding public. This award not only makes us proud, but also allows us to have new market insights to orient our offer by taking into account the choices of the magazine’s readers,’ comments Ivana Jelinic, ENIT President and CEO.
