PRESS RELEASE

THE NETWORK OF ITALIAN MEDIAEVAL TOWNS FOR HISTORICAL AND LIVING HISTORY TOURISM IS CREATED

OBJECTIVE: TO ENHANCE AND PROMOTE EXCELLENT MEDIEVAL SITES

ENIT AS KEY PARTNER FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF METHODOLOGIES AND TOOLS TARGETING THE 'ITALY OF TRADITIONS' TOURISM DEMAND SEGMENT

On Tuesday 12 March at 11.00 a.m. Enit signed the memorandum of understanding with the Network of Italian Medieval Towns, an association of 28 municipalities subdivided into 10 regions characterised by a tangible and intangible heritage regarding the vitally important medieval period.

The network's objective is to create an Italian tourism offer highly focused on the medieval authenticity of the various locations, through the joint promotion of a calendar of events and historical re-enactments of absolute excellence. The medieval towns that are part of the network are Pistoia, Prato, Fucecchio, Calenzano, Volterra, Incisa Scapaccino, Ariano Irpino, Fermo, Monteriggioni, Serravalle Pistoiese, San Gimignano, Sutri, Civita di Bagnoregio, Cairo Montenotte, Anagni, Boville Ernica, Stroncone, Vitorchiano, Tarquinia, Mandas, San Gemini, Viterbo, Narni, Bevagna, Perugia, Santa Fiora, Scurcola Marsicana and Pandino. The Municipality of Viterbo, leader of the network, will also present a preview of the programme of the 6th edition of the Festival of Medieval Places, which will take place on 22 March in the splendid setting of Palazzo dei Priori.

ENIT will support the network in planning targeted surveys and research, organising workshops on the thematic area of 'tourism of the traditions' and on communication.

ENIT Board Member Sandro Pappalardo, Lazio Region Councillor Daniele Sabatini, Umbria Region Councillor Eleonora Pace, and a delegation of municipal administrations adhering to the network with Francesca Pietrangeli from the Municipality of Viterbo, Luigi Serafini deputy mayor of the Municipality of Tarquinia, Luca Profili mayor of the Municipality of Bagnoregio, Alessandro Sabella Tourism Councillor of the Municipality of Pistoia and the Presidents of the Regional Associations of Historical Re-enactment of Umbria and Lazio, Carlo Paolocci and Antonio Tempesta.

Together with Renato Chiti, Destination Manager, the preview will include a presentation of the guidelines and the state of the art of the project, which aims to valorise and promote Italian locations with a strong historical identity. Coordinated, promoted and marketed by Medieval Italy, a Destination Management Company, the project will involve the production of exclusive digital editorial content (converging into the TDH - Tourism Digital Hub of the Ministry of Tourism). It will also feature the development of a unified cultural-tourism offer on Historical Re-enactments, in line with the recent definition of the governmental regulatory framework that recognises and enhances the role of such events in the country's cultural and social heritage.

The appointment will highlight how the Middle Ages represent a key theme in the city's tourism and cultural planning. Speeches by Francesca Pietrangeli and Maria Chiara Giovannelli will highlight the fundamental role of the Network in the processes of tourism development and the 2033 European Capital of Culture bid.
