Top experiences

Lombardy is a region rich in history, monuments and castles that bear witness to past eras.

Here, there are 5 special experiences!

- Rocca Scaligera, Sirmione (BS)

An unusual example of a lake fortification, the Rocca Scaligera (Scaliger Castle) in Sirmione (13th century) is one of the best-preserved castles in Italy. Completely surrounded by the waters of Lake Garda, it features the characteristic dock with three towers and, above all, the 47-metre-high keep. It is possible to climb to the top of the keep via recently restored wooden stairs: a privileged view of the lake and Sirmione.

- Castle of San Giorgio, Mantua (MN)

Built at the end of the 14th century for military needs, it was renovated only half a century later. The noblewoman Isabella d'Este, one of the most influential female figures of the Italian Renaissance, lived here for a long time. Today it appears as a square building with corner towers surrounded by a moat that is crossed by three drawbridges. But it is inside that the ancient manor house holds its most precious jewels, such as the Camera Picta (The Bridal Chamber), by Mantegna, who created it over a period of nine years (from 1465 to 1474).

- Malpaga Castle, Cavernago (BG)

On the outside an impenetrable fortress, on the inside evidence of a court life dedicated to bien vivre. This is Cavernago, a small municipality within Serio Park in the province of Bergamo. Here stands the Malpaga Castle. The castle, which is still surrounded by cultivated fields, is the epicentre of a project for the rebirth of the historic village.

- Vezio Castle, Perledo (LC)

At the centre of Lake Como, on a promontory overlooking the town of Varenna, stands the silhouette of Vezio Castle, a military outpost erected in the late Middle Ages to defend the surrounding villages. All that remains of the complex today is a watchtower accessed by a drawbridge. Surrounded by one of the northernmost olive groves in the world, the castle enjoys an atmosphere of great charm.

- Rocca Borromeo, Angera (VA)

This is the southern shore of Lake Maggiore: here, on a rocky spur, the Rocca di Angera. What strikes the visitor is the spectacular architectural balance displayed by the five different buildings, built from the year 1000 onwards. The interior rooms offer a truly stunning tour of frescoes, canvases, furnishings and original decorations restored to their initial splendour by careful restoration work. The fortress also houses the Museum of Dolls and Toys, with over a thousand exhibits.
