Climate-sensitive Tourism: a new way to look at the future of tourism

Climate change is already making differences in tourism: more unstable seasons, vulnerable destinations, and tourists who are more sustainability-aware. To deal with this transformation, ENIT S.p.A. has begun its Climate-sensitive Tourism research project.

The aim is twofold: analysing the ways in which the climate crisis is influencing supply and demand in the tourist industry, and offering businesses, destinations, and institutions solid means to adapt and innovate. “Climate adaptation” does not just mean preventing damage, it is also about protecting people, places and businesses, turning problems into new opportunities for sustainable development.

The project is guided by a scientific committee of industry experts and teachers, all working together to produce shared data, models and practices. All the results will be available as open data, to be used by public and private sector professionals, academia and travellers themselves.

A central part of the research concerns Climate-sensitive Travellers: conscious tourists, ready to choose destinations that are responsible and resilient, and who want to feel like they too have a role to play in the fight against climate change. This new approach can also be a competitive advantage for the tourist system, rethinking products, services, and marketing strategies in a sustainable key.

The e-book you are about to download is the project’s first dissemination result. It is an invitation to look harder at the “challenge of the century” and, together, to build a tourist industry able to withstand the changes and, at the same time, generate value for people, local areas, and communities.
