PRESS RELEASE

ENIT: EASTER HOLIDAYS ARE LONGER WITH 142,000 FOREIGNERS AND MORE THAN 35,000 AMERICANS COMING. HERE ARE THE DESTINATIONS

There will be at least seven nights of foreign visitors in Italy for Easter week. International airline bookings to Italy stand at 141,000 from 9 to 15 April 2023, an increase of 29% over the similar period in 2022 (17 to 23 April). Americans are also coming back: according to ENIT, based on Forwardkeys data, bookings by Americans at the moment stand at 35,750 and mark an increase of about +50% compared to last year, representing 25.4% of the foreign total.

Apart from Rome and Milan, the ranking of favourite cities includes Venice, Naples, Florence and Bologna. More than 64,000 international airport arrivals are expected in Rome (+47% compared to 2022), 45.4% of the total. Milan follows with about 27,000 bookings (19.1%) and an increase of +72.2%, the highest compared to other destinations.

People are choosing economy travel, to which 84% of the total volume is attributable, and booking directly with the airlines (54.7% of the total). People are traveling predominantly in couples: 41.8% of international airport bookings are attributable to 2 passengers.

In comparison with the main competitors, Italy comes out with flying colours, with only Spanish volumes slightly higher than the Bel Paese: about 186,000 flight bookings from abroad, 45,000 more than Italy. For France, there are 129,000 international bookings, but with a slightly higher increase (+33.2% vs. Italy +29%, Spain +18.7%). For Greece, there are about 55,000 foreign bookings (+4.9%), in line with last year's result.

‘Italy is long established as one of the favourite European destinations for Easter holidays. We are second only to Spain. The love for our country is no longer just local, the figures tell us that over 35,000 bookings come from the United States, one of the most important targets for Italian tourism in terms of spending. This is proof that we are working well but that we must and can do even more, also because the real challenge is to deseasonalise in order to have tourism all year round. And this is what we will be working on in the coming months,' commented Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè.

‘Italy is brimming with fresh entrepreneurial energy, and this attracts the attention and interest of the national and international tourist market. This is good feedback on the incoming promotion work carried out by ENIT, which is promoting and showcasing Italy in the main hubs and events around the world,’ says Ivana Jelinic, ENIT President and CEO.
