One of the jars in the Nutella® Buongiorno limited edition, created in collaboration with ENIT, is dedicated to Milan, represented through two main elements - the Cathedral and the skyscraper skyline - expressing the city’s architectural evolution.
The Duomo, Milan's Cathedral is one of the city’s most recognisable symbols and a building whose construction spans a long period of time. Building work began in the 14th century, continued for over five centuries and is, to this day, ongoing through maintenance and restoration, making it a work in constant evolution. More than 3000 statues adorn the cathedral. One of the most curious was created in 1810 by Camillo Pacetti and is reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty. This little-known detail testifies to the iconographic variety of the decorative scheme.
The coexistence of historical and contemporary elements is particularly striking in Milan. New vertical neighbourhoods develop alongside the city’s monumental heritage, while the urban fabric holds more subtle points of interest. Via Giulini is home to a church just six metres long but with a façade twelve metres high while, in the Sant'Ambrogio area, the Colonna del Diavolo has two holes associated with a popular legend, and kissing on the Ponte delle Sirene in Parco Sempione is said to prevent infidelity.
Another distinctive element is the 208-metre-long bench in Parco del Portello, considered one of the largest in the world, made from thousands of wooden and iron components.
On a culinary level, the design highlights Pan de Mej, a traditional Lombardy dessert linked to rural culture. Its origin is associated with spring festivities, particularly St George's Day, when it was eaten with fresh cream as a symbol of seasonal rebirth. Its evolution, however, is less well known: it was originally made using a higher proportion of millet - or mej - flour (hence the name), then gradually replaced with maize as this crop became widespread in Lombardy. This development contributed to its current texture and flavour. In the recipe provided on the jar, Pan de Mej is reinterpreted using Nutella®, upholding the tradition while giving it a contemporary flavour.
