The Nutella® Buongiorno limited edition, produced in collaboration with ENIT, also includes Rome, chosen as one of the cities of art representing Italy's heritage. The design tells the city’s story through several elements expressing its identity - the Colosseum and Roman columns - accompanied by a recipe inspired by the local culinary tradition.
Rome is a city whose monumental heritage exists alongside a more layered and less visible dimension. Alongside its great icons, the urban fabric still contains traces of different eras which overlap in an ongoing conversation.
The elements depicted on the jar include the Colosseum, one of the most recognisable monuments in the world. Built in the 1st century AD, for hundreds of years it was not merely an entertainment venue but also a space adaptable to a variety of functions. Less well known is its history after the fall of the Empire, when the amphitheatre was gradually transformed to host dwellings, shops and even a small community, becoming an integral part of daily life in the city.
Together with the Colosseum, Roman columns continue to be a recurring theme within the urban landscape, not only performing an architectural function in this ‘eternal city’ but also often having stories to tell. Some, like Trajan's Column, are genuine sculpted chronicles in which a series of bas-reliefs describes historical events in sequence, transforming the stone pillar into a narrative medium. Over time, many of these columns have been reused or relocated, becoming part of newer buildings or contemporary urban settings and contributing to the stratification so characteristic of the city's identity.
On a culinary level, the story is completed by maritozzo, a traditional Roman dessert. Historically associated with Lent, it used to be made using a simpler recipe than the one used today. Less famous is its significance; indeed, maritozzo was often given as a pledge of love and, legend has it, might have had a small gift, like a ring, hidden inside it. The version on the jar is reinterpreted using Nutella®, upholding the tradition while adapting it to contemporary tastes.
